DAVAO CITY (Updated) -- A mayor in a town in Compostela Valley province was killed in an ambush while his driver was critically wounded Wednesday morning, a military official reported.

Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) information officer Capt. Alberto Caber said Laak town Mayor Rey Navarro, 62, was on his way to the municipal hall when the convoy that included his vehicle was attacked upon reaching Purok 12, Barangay Sigayen in nearby Asunsion town in Davao del Norte around 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Caber said Navarro was rushed to Tagum Doctor's Hospital where he died around 10:30 a.m.

One of the mayor's security escorts and his driver were also wounded in the attack.

Police investigation showed that Navarro and his companions were traversing along the highway of K9 in the village of Sagayen, Asuncion, when gunmen waylaid them.
