(UPDATED) Five communist rebels were killed and two others were captured, one of them was injured, in a clash with government forces in Matnog town in Sorsogon on Friday.
Captain Mardjorie Panesa, public affairs officer of the Army's 9th Infantry Division, said the fighting was brought about by the New People Army's extortion activities.
Panesa said troops from the Army's 31st Infantry Battalion were deployed to conduct security operations at Sitio Hukdong in Bolocawe village after receiving information from a village official about the rebels' actuation.
Around 5:44 a.m. Friday, Panesa said the troops -- backed by local policemen -- caught up with about 25 rebels at the area, ensuing a 30-minute firefight.
During clearing operations, the troops recovered at the scene five bodies of NPA rebels, whose names were not immediately known.
Panesa said two rebels were also captured, one of them wounded. She said the wounded rebel was given first aid treatment by the troops before he was transferred to a hospital.
She said the soldiers likewise recovered at the encounter site five high-powered firearms. (VR/Sunnex)
