THE Luzon grid experienced Friday afternoon at least one hour rotational brownout due to insufficient power supply after a power plant bogged down.

According to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), it had to issue the "red alert" notice to its Luzon grid customers as system indicated that during peak hours of 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., the available capacity was at 8,139 megawatts (MW), while demand was at 8,403 MW.

"The unavailability and/or the reduced capability of certain power plants led to this situation where contingency reserve is zero because of a generation deficiency," it said.

The Department of Energy (DOE) said that a unit of Pagbilao power plant, which has the capacity of 375 MW, went on emergency shut down on Friday.

Citing a report of Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla, Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said that approximately 2 percent or 84,000 customers were affected by the brownout.

Bulk of the affected customers or about 78,000 were residential, 5,690 were commercial and 169 were industrial.

Among the areas, which experienced rotational brownout, were Sampaloc and Sta. Cruz in Manila; Caloocan; Malabon; Navotas; and Marilao, Meycauayan, and San Jose del Monte, all in Bulacan. (SDR/Sunnex)
