DAVAO (Updated) -- Government security forces arrested in Davao City on Wednesday morning a ranking leader of the New People's Army (NPA) who has a P5.4-million bounty for his capture, a military spokesman said.

Captain Alberto Caber, spokesman of the military's Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom), said Roy Erecre, alias Toto and Pasyong, was nabbed in the company of his girlfriend, Judith Jaron-Niog.

Caber said Jaron-Niog was also taken into custody, pending investigation if she has pending cases or if she is connected with the rebel movement.

The two were nabbed by military intelligence and police operatives around 11 a.m. in the city by virtue of several arrest warrants. Erecre's cases include the ambush-slaying of two officers in Carmen, Bohol in 1999.

Caber said the two were accosted "after a week-long surveillance in the Island while the duo were Island-hopping in the different beaches and tourist destinations in the region."

Erecre is the secretary of the Central Visayas Regional Committee and is an alternate member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Philippines, the NPAs political arm.

"Erecre has a bounty of P5.4 million for his arrest. He will be explaining to the Communist Party why he is in the beaches and hotels of Davao with a married woman while the Communist party is looking for replacements for the arrested Tiamzon couple," said Caber.

"His arrest will render the CPP-NPA in Central Visayas vulnerable to more arrest in the future," said Caber.

Caber said Eastmincom commander Lieutenant General Ricardo Rainier Cruz "lauded the AFP operatives for their persistence and sacrifices in pursuing the leads leading to the capture of the duo."

"He (Cruz) also praised the informant that became crucial to the arrest of the long-wanted NPA leader," added Caber. (VR/Sunnex)
