MALACAÑANG assured on Saturday that concerned government agencies are preparing for changes in the climate scenario especially for the looming El Nino this coming June.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), El Nino could affect the normal rainfall pattern in the country generally resulting in reduced rainfall.

El Nino is also characterized by unusually warm ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific.

Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said that preparations are contained in the Philippine Development Plan (PDP), specifically under its Climate-change Adaptation and Mitigation aspect.

“Since January, when the Cabinet had a meeting with the President, he declared that they must prepare for any scenario that may come whether it be El Nino or La Nina,” Coloma said in an interview over state-run dzRB Radyo ng Bayan.

Coloma noted that the country has just been through calamities such as strong typhoons and massive floods and that El Niño would be the opposite.

He, however, assured that measures are being set up and continue to be set up to protect agriculture and all other sectors that could possibly be affected by the change in climate. (PNA)
