BAGUIO CITY -- Former Chief Justice Renato Corona has temporarily shelved his retirement pay claim with the Supreme Court (SC).

Corona's request was granted by the justices in an en banc session here on Tuesday.

In his letter, Corona said he will not pursue his claim for the meantime to avoid putting his former colleagues in a difficult situation in deciding the request.

Some of the justices expressed support to Corona when he was under trial for betrayal of public trust by the impeachment court in 2012.

He was convicted by the senator-judges for not fully disclosing his cash deposits in the Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN).

After his ouster, Corona told the SC that he is entitled to receive retirement benefits because impeachment only carries the penalty of removal from office.

Corona, who served the High Court from April 2002 to May 2012, hinted at reviving his claim in the future. (Sunnex)
