ARRESTED Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army (CPP-NPA) top leaders Benito and Wilma Tiamzon refused to enter a plea during their arraignment at a Quezon City court on Tuesday.

The Quezon City Regional Trial Court branch 81 entered a not guilty plea on behalf of the Tiamzon couple on charges of serious illegal detention and two counts of kidnapping.

Under court rules, if the accused refuses to enter his/her plea, the court will automatically enter a not guilty plea.

The Tiamzons were accused of abducting four military officers and a narcotics command agent at a checkpoint.

The Tiamzon couple, along with five others, was arrested by joint military and police teams Aloguinsan, Cebu last March 22.

Aside from the said cases, the couple is also facing charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, murder, multiple murder and frustrated murder cases before the Northern Samar Regional Trial Court.

The murder charges were in relation to the alleged involvement of the Tiamzons in the killing of civilians in Inopacan, Leyte, whose bodies were discovered in a mass grave in 2006, while the illegal possession of firearms cases stemmed after the authorities have seized equipment in their custody during their arrest in Cebu.

After the arraignment, the Tiamzons were immediately brought back to their detention cell in Camp Crame in Quezon City. (Sunnex)
