CLOSE friends, old allies and immediate family members will join detained former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in her 67th birthday Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) in Quezon City.

On top of the list are Arroyo's husband Jose Miguel, sons Diosdado and Juan Miguel and daughter Maria Evangeline and their respective family.

Aside from the Arroyo children, old friends and political allies are also expected to visit the former leader, who is an incumbent representative of Pampanga.

The Sandiganbayan earlier granted Arroyo's request for extended visiting hours on April 4 and 6 while her family members can stay at her hospital suite during the weekend, citing humanitarian reasons.

Lawyer Modesto Ticman Jr., a member of Arroyo's legal team, said the authorities will be implementing the same protocol for the Pampanga lawmaker's visitors and will be only allowed to stay inside her VMMC suite up to 9:30 p.m.

The country's former chief executive is under hospital arrest at VMMC due to a plunder case filed against her for her alleged involvement in defrauding the government of P366-million through unlawful transfer of confidential and intelligence funds of Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) from January 2008 to June 2010.

The Sandiganbayan First Division last month has junked Arroyo's furlough petition to celebrate birthday in her home town in Lubao, Pampanga.

Plunder, a capital offense, is punishable by life imprisonment hence non-bailable and it likewise entails forfeiture of defendants' assets it they are found guilty of the crime. (Sunnex)
