DOH report: HIV cases abound in love month

THERE is no love lost between human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the month of February as almost 500 new cases were recorded in that month by the Department of Health (DOH).

According to the February 2014 Philippine HIV and AIDS Registry Report, a total of 486 new cases of HIV were recorded in February 2014.

"This is 43 percent higher compared to the same period last year, which was 339," said the report.

The number is slightly lower than the highest number of 491 new cases of HIV recorded in October 2013.

Of the new cases in February, 36 already progressed to full-blown acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

The report also noted that eight people with HIV/AIDS also died last February.

A total of 458 cases (94 percent) of the new cases were acquired through sexual transmission, mostly from the men-having-sex-with-men (MSM) population, which accounted for 377 cases or 82 percent. [Know more about HIV and AIDS.]

Homosexual contact was responsible for 235 cases (51 percent); followed by bisexual contact with 142 cases (31 percent); and 81 cases (18 percent) from heterosexual contact.

Injecting drug use meanwhile accounted for 28 new cases, said the DOH.

Fifty new cases among overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), meanwhile, have been reported with all coming from sexual transmission.

Heterosexual contact was on top among OFWs with 22 cases (44 percent) while homosexual and bisexual contact had 14 cases (28 percent) each.

For the first two months of the year, there are already 934 HIV cases with 93 already diagnosed as AIDS while 16 died from the disease.

Since 1984, there are 17,450 new HIV cases have already been recorded by the DOH with 1,599 progressing already into AIDS cases while those who have died is already at 950. (HDT/Sunnex)
