THE Philippines is among the 16 beneficiaries of the worldwide Earth Hour Blue event set on Saturday.

The Earth Hour Blue, a project launched by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), aims to inspire participants to financially support communities all over the world through environmental campaigns.

For an hour, between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. in local time zones across the globe, households and different community sectors are encouraged to turn off non-essential lights as a symbol of commitment to the planet.

A portion of the proceeds of the project will be built into motorboats for the families in coastal villages in the Philippines who were affected by Super Typhoon Yolanda in November last year.

The WWF said the motorboats will be made of fiberglass and plastic.

This year, the WWF announced an Instagram photo challenge. Five winners will win T-shirts signed by Andy Ridley, Earth Hour's co-founder and spokesperson.

The hashtags #EarthHour, #SpiderMan and #YourPower should be posted along with a picture of the participants. [See the mechanics.]

Isabelo Montejo, executive director of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Central Visayas, also urged Filipinos to join the cause.

"The crushing devastation wrought by Super Typhoon Yolanda reminds us that climate change is a serious issue and that we have to join hands together in making our planet worth living to our future generations,” Montejo said.

Some 48 SM malls all over the country, including SM Pampanga, SM City Cebu, and SM Consolacion, are set to participate in the global activity. [Read the related story.]

In Cebu, Cebu Holdings Inc. and subsidiary Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corp., two big companies that operate commercial hubs in Cebu Business Park and I.T. Park., will also join Saturday's annual event.

For the hour-long switch-off of selected lighting and electrical equipment, an estimated 6,906.77-kilowatt hour will be saved. This is inclusive of Cebu Business Park, Cebu I.T. Park, including Ayala Center Cebu, Cebu Holdings Center, Ayala Life FGU Center, City Sports Club Cebu, Park Towers 1 and 2, Amara, Garden Ridge Village, eOffice, The Walk and eBloc 1 and 2. (Sunnex)
