2 troops killed, 4 hurt in Quezon ambush

MANILA -- Two soldiers were killed while four others were wounded following an ambush perpetrated by the New People's Army (NPA) in Barangay Cogorin, Lopez town in Quezon province Monday morning.

Lieutenant Colonel Oliver Maquiling, 2nd Infantry civil-military operations chief, said all of the casualties belong to the 85th Infantry Battalion.

The incident happened around 7:30 a.m.

He added that the troopers, aboard a KM-450 truck, were heading to Barangay Vegaflor for a military-initiated medical mission when waylaid by the rebels.

In the ensuing firefight, a lieutenant was killed along with enlisted personnel while four others were wounded.

An undetermined number of rebels were killed and wounded in the government troopers' return fire.

Pursuit operations are still ongoing. (PNA)
