Wednesday, March 19, 2014
A FORMER Ateneo de Davao University professor has been appointed by President Benigno Aquino III as Deputy Ombudsman for Mindanao.
Lawyer Rodolfo Elman is currently the Assistant Ombudsman for Mindanao. He got the highest number of votes (five) from the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC), which screened applicants for the position left by Humphrey Monteroso in December 4 last year.
Also included in the shortlist submitted by the JBC to the President were Rowena Apao-Adlawan, Ombudsman Director Maria Iluminada Lapid-Viva, Romeo Alcantara and Melinda Alconcel-Dayanghirang.
The Office of the Ombudsman has an overall deputy and deputies in the country’s main political divisions, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, and Military and Other Law Enforcement Offices, which is now vacant following the retirement of Emilio Gonzales III last month.
Gonzales was removed by Malacañang in 2011 for allegedly sitting on the case and asking for bribe money from a policeman involved in the bloody Manila hostage-taking in August 2010.
He fought and won against his dismissal before the Supreme Court (SC), which reinstated him to the post in September 2012. (Sunnex)
