MANILA - Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) dethroned three-time champion De La Salle University (DLSU) on Saturday to bag its first UAAP women's volleyball crown before more than 21,000 fans at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Lady Eagles swept the Lady Spikers in Game 4, 25-23, 26-24, 25-21, to complete an improbable run in the tournament, surviving elimination starting from the step-ladder semifinals weeks back.
Alyssa Valdez, who scooped both season and Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors, finished with 21 points, 19 coming from attacks and two service aces. Michelle Morente and Marie de Jesus contributed 11 and 10 markers, respectively.
Ara Galang topscored for La Salle with 11 points while graduating skipper Abigail Maraño was held to eight points.
It was a bitter loss for the Lady Spikers, recipients of the thrice-to-beat bonus after sweeping the 14-game elimination round.
The Lady Eagles ended the Lady Spikers' two-year winning streak in Game 1, 17-25, 25-23, 25-13, 25-20.
La Salle regrouped in Game 2 before Ateneo took Game 3 in five sets, a momentum they carried into the winner-take-all match.
