ST. MICHAEL’S Play Garden, the only Steiner Waldorf kindergarten in Cebu, will hold a Parents' Orientation this Saturday, March 15, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The highlights of the orientation are two talks on "Why Play is Better than Reading or Writing" (9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.) and "Are You Ready to Be a Parent?" (2 p.m. to 4 p.m.).

The following week, from March 17 to 21 (Monday to Friday) at 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the school will also hold "A Day in a Waldorf Kindergarten," a program that allows guests to observe the school's playgroup in their day-to-day activities.

The Waldorf philosophy of education is based on the work of the Austrian scientist and philosopher Rudolf Steiner, who believed in the need for a more holistic and age-appropriate approach to the development of young children. It emphasizes the importance of play, in harmony with nature, as the most important function of a young child.

As such, Waldorf preschools do not make use of tests, grades, uniforms, and even reading and writing (which are believed to be best left for the elementary years), and instead, let the children express their creativity through song and dance, arts and crafts, and indoor and outdoor play.

As a result of Cebuano parents' growing demand for alternative, more child-friendly education, a group of parents and teachers established St. Michael's Play Garden in July 2011.

"This is the only preschool that offers daily outdoor play to children in a spacious garden that offers them challenging physical play activities and direct contact with nature. No other place allows them to run, jump, climb, garden, and play with dirt. This is a much-needed experience in their lives so that they develop healthy bodies and a healthy relationship with nature. And of course, they become happier children because of this outdoor experience. I think that's the uniqueness we can offer, a program that truly serves the children's needs," said Grace C. Ferreros, the school coordinator.

St. Michael's Play Garden offers a variety of programs including a Parent Toddler group, Kindergarten, and after-school activities known as C.A.M.P. (Crafts, Arts, Music, and Practical Arts). These events, both of which are free and open to the public, provide an opportunity for parents concerned about their children's education and development to learn about the benefits of play and the Steiner Waldorf philosophy.

St. Michael's Play Garden is located on Coast Pacific St., St. Michael Road, Banilad, Cebu City. For inquiries, one may call 415-0382 or 0932-886-3041, or e-mail (PR)
