Binay to still raise funds for Zapanta-A A +A

VICE President Jejomar Binay said Wednesday he remains committed in helping raise the blood money for migrant worker Joselito Zapanta, who could be executed for killing a Sudanese national in 2009.
"It is my responsibility to care for the welfare of our OFWs. There is no politics here. This is my duty," the Vice President said in response to the concern of Zapanta's family over alleged erroneous reports than an emir would help Binay raise the blood money.
Binay revealed last February that Prince Khalid Bin Bandar Bin Abdul Aziz, nephew of Saudi King Abdullah and emir of the Riyadh region, is believed to have pledged SAR 1 million for Zapanta.
"It was the embassy that informed me about the pledge. Zapanta had no knowledge about it," said Binay, the presidential adviser on OFW concerns.
The family of Imam Ibrahim initially asked for SAR 5 million for the execution of a tanazul or affidavit of forgiveness and prevent the imposition of the death penalty, but later reduced the amount to SAR 4 million.
Donations for Zapanta may be made to the Riyadh Philippine Embassy’s sub-account in the Saudi Hollandi Bank: Account Number 037-040-790-022, International Bank Account Number (IBAN): SA 61-5000-0000-0370-4079-0022, Swift Code: AAALSARI, the Vice President said.
Aside from Zapanta, there are 26 death penalty cases in the Middle East involving OFWs being monitored by the Department of Foreign Affairs Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Worker’s Affairs. (Sunnex)
