MANILA -- The first three days of the week will continue to have good weather and storm-free, but cold and rainy weather will remain in many parts of the country due to the effects of the northeast monsoon, the state weather bureau said Sunday.

In an interview, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysicaland Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weather forecaster Gener Quitlong said the agency is not anticipating any cyclone to affect the country until Wednesday.

Parts of Visayas and Luzon including Metro Manila will continue to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with passing light rains because of the effects of the cold northeast monsoon or “hanging amihan” -- a mass of cold air that blows into the country from Siberia.

Hanging amihan is responsible for the cool weather the country experiences from early November to mid-March.

For Sunday forecast, Quitlong said that Caraga Region will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms.

The temperature for Metro Manila ranges 21-31 degrees Celsius for Sunday.

The rest of Mindanao, he noted will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rains due to localized convection.

It added that moderate to strong winds from the northeast will prevail over Luzon, Visayas and Eastern Mindanao and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough.

Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the northeast with slight to moderate seas.

The state weather bureau also issued gale warning as strong to gale-force winds associated with the northeast monsoon, will affect the northern seaboard of Northern Luzon and the eastern seaboards of Southern Luzon and Visayas.

"Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves," it warned.

For the rest of the week, Quitlong said Luzon and Visayas will experience generally fair weather conditions apart from isolated light rains especially over the eastern section due to Northeast Monsoon.

Mindanao will be partly cloudy to cloudy with chances of isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms due to wind convergence.

By Monday (March 10), Eastern Visayas and the regions of Caraga and Davao will be cloudy with light to moderate rainhsowers and thunderstorms. Luzon and the rest of Visayas will continue to experience generally fair weather apart from isolated light rains particularly over the eastern section. The rest of Mindanao will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.

Throughout the rest of the outlook period (March 11 - 14), good weather condition is expected over Luzon and Visayas except for some isolated light rains over the eastern section.

Mindanao will continue to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with afternoon or evening rainshowers or thunderstorms.

It added relatively warmer days are also expected on most parts of the country and no tropical cyclone is expected throughout the outlook period.

This outlook will be updated as soon as significant changes in the weather pattern occurs.

Quitlong said they still do not see the weather disturbance to enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) for the next four to five days. (PNA)
