FORMER Olympian Roel Velasco, the current Philippine Boxing Team coach, said two Negrense boxers in the national team are set to fly to Malaysia to compete in the Agong Cup.
Velasco, who witnessed the Pinoy Pride XXIV at Solaire Resort and Casino Saturday, said the pugilists are Argie Alabado (56 kgs) of Barangay Napoles in Bago City, and Nico Magliquian (60 kgs) of Talisay City.
The rest of the Filipino sluggers are Jed Bornea (52 kgs) of General Santos City, Joel Bacho (64 kgs) of Mandaluyong City, and Nataniel Montealto (69 kgs) of Palawan.
“The competition is part of the national team’s international exposure for the upcoming Asian Games in Korea. They are not yet in the list for the Asian Games but this is the tournament where they will be evaluated,” Velasco said.
The Philippine team is also preparing for another competition in Sri Lanka in April where Ian Bautista of Himamaylan City might be part of the contingent.
“The level of competitiveness in boxing has tremendously increased and we have to join the trend or else we will be left behind,” he said.
