ZAMBOANGA CITY (Updated) -- A judge was shot dead Friday by motorcycle-riding gunmen in an east coast village in this city, police reported.
Judge Reynerio Estacio Sr. of Zamboanga Regional Trial Court branch 14 was leaving his house along with his wife, Teresita, when the incident happened around 7:40 a.m., said Police Station 6 commander Chief Inspector Felixberto Martinez.
The judge died at the hospital after sustaining four gunshot wounds. His wife was unhurt.
Martinez said the shooting incident occurred at Narrac Drive in Barangay Tugbungan, east of this city.
Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno said she will look for ways on how to better protect members of the bench and their families in light of Estacio’s killing.
Sereno said she will not allow Estacio’s death to go down as another statistic, considering the judiciary's lack of investigative or law enforcement capacities.
"When lawless violence claims one of our own, it wounds us more grievously not only because we would be one good man less but also because the rule of law is diminished by the sheer force of arms," Sereno said in a statement.
She instructed Zamboanga City Executive Judge Peter Eisma to "closely monitor" the police investigation and provide whatever assistance and support to Estacio's family at the moment.
Eisma was set to submit to the Supreme Court an initial report on Friday. (Sunnex)
