CEBU CITY -- The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) announced that power transmission service has been restored in at least six major areas in Mindanao after a region-wide blackout early Thursday.

The Mindanao-wide blackout happened at 3:53 a.m. Thursday, affecting various areas in the island, including the provinces of Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Compostela Valley, North Cotabato, Bukidnon, Maguindanao, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and the cities of Davao, Zamboanga, Butuan, General Santos, and Cagayan de Oro.

The NGCP said though that as of 9:30 a.m., transmission service was restored in the cities of Davao, General Santos, Zamboanga, Pagadian, Cagayan de Oro, and parts of Misamis Oriental.

It said in its latest bulletin that it is still determining the cause of the blackout, and is “working to restore the power transmission service to all power customers.”

Department of Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla said in a television interview that about 70 percent of the power transmission in the island has been restored as of 1 p.m.
