ZAMBOANGA CITY – Six gunmen believed to be members of a kidnap-for-ransom group abducted a businesswoman in an east coast village of this city, the police said Thursday.

The incident took place around 8:56 p.m. Wednesday at Calle Pohoc in the village of Mercedes, 12.75 kilometers (km) east of this city, said Zamboanga Peninsula police information officer Chief Inspector Ariel Huesca.

He said the suspects, who seized Voon when she came to the aid of her son and mother, forced Voon to board into a white van with registered plate number GPH-851 and sped toward the nearby village of Talabaan.

Huesca said Police Station 4 (PS4) policemen have responded but lost track of the suspects.

However, they have recovered the white van at Sitio Gapuh in the village of Talabaan, 18.45 kilometers east of this city.

Huesca said the suspects and the victims were believed to have boarded on a motorized banca because the area where the getaway vehicle was recovered is near to the shore of Talabaan village.

Authorities also discovered that the getaway vehicle was rented from a local rent-a-car firm.

Ignacio Curambao, who owns the vehicle, said his van was rented by a certain Ryan Cuevas Santos, 24, of Tumaga village, this city.
