Magnitude 5.3 quake rocks Ilocos Norte

MANILA -- A magnitude 5.3 earthquake rattled Ilocos Norte Monday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The tremor's epicenter was located at 29 kilometers southwest of Burgos town, at a depth of 25 kilometers. It occurred at 1:56 p.m.

There has been no report of damage or injury from the quake, Phivolcs said.

The following earthquake intensities were felt: Intensity 5 - Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte; Intensity 4 - Sarrat, Laoag and Paoay, Ilocos Norte; Intensity 3 - Sinait, Ilocos Sur; and, Intensity 2 - Santa, Ilocos Sur.

The Philippines lies in the "Pacific Ring of Fire," an area where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. (Sunnex)
