MAKATI City Representative Abigail Binay confirmed Monday that she won a posh studio-type condominium unit in Rockwell Land's The Grove in Pasig City in a Christmas raffle promo sponsored by a Makati-based mall.
Binay said that she still can't believe that she won in the raffle since many others have also joined in the promo. She said he has low expectation every time she fills up a raffle coupon.
She added that she was entitled to a single raffle coupon when she accumulated the required amount of purchased after she bought gifts for her love ones in the Power Plant mall last Yuletide Season.
Rockwell Power Plant mall is located in her city, where her brother Jejomar Erwin Binay is mayor. The Binays are children of Vice President Jejomar Binay who started his political career as mayor of Makati City.
"Di ako makapaniwala, kasi out of many that have joined the raffle. Ako naman wala naming expectations sa mga ganun [contests] eh. Nakakagulat," the Makati representative said.
The lawmaker said she also won minor prizes in several other raffle promos in the past.
"Madalas akong manalo sa raffle. Dati nanalo ako ng flat tv, painting. Dati nanalo ako ng trip to Hong Kong kaya ako mahilig sumali sa mga raffle," Binay said.
Binay added that it is quite unfair for the public to judge her for lacking "delicadeza" since she won in the contest fairly.
"Hindi naman ako nandaya. It was purely luck," said the lawmaker said after she received criticisms following her latest win.
She said that she still has to pay the gift tax for the condo unit amounting to P800,000 to the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).
Meanwhile, House Ethics Committee chairman Joaquin Chipeco said that there is nothing wrong with Binay's activity since the contest is open for everybody.
He added that he didn’t think it is a violation of their rules since it is only a game of chance and not gambling. (Sunnex)
