Thursday, January 30, 2014
FIVE lawyers are vying for the nod of President Benigno Aquino III to become the next Deputy Ombudsman for Mindanao based in Davao City.
Assistant Ombudsman Rodolfo Elman and Rowena Apao-Adlawan both got five votes from the seven-member Judicial and Bar Council (JBC), which is headed by Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
Ombudsman Director Maria Iluminada Lapid-Viva, Romeo Alcantara and Melinda Alconcel-Dayanghirang received four votes each.
The names will be submitted to Aquino, who will choose the successor of Deputy Ombudsman for Mindanao Humphrey Monteroso who retired last December 4.
Meanwhile, the JBC is now looking for candidates for Deputy Ombudsman for the Military and Other Law Enforcement Offices that would be vacated by Emilio Gonzales III on February 6.
Last Tuesday, the Supreme Court (SC) stood pat in its decision to reinstate Gonzales to his position after Malacañang removed him in March 2011 for allegedly sitting on the case of Senior Inspector Rolando Mendoza, who figured in a bloody hostage-taking incident at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila in August 2010.
The SC also junked the President’s power to kick out a deputy ombudsman but the reason behind the decision has yet to be released. (Sunnex)
