Magnitude 5 quake jolts Davao Occidental

(Updated) SOME areas in Davao Occidental (formerly part of Davao del Sur) that experienced flooding conditions on Sunday, was jolted by a magnitude 5 earthquake.

The tremor hit the province at 9:07 p.m. Sunday.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the epicenter of the quake, which is tectonic in origin, was located 44 kilometers (km) southeast of Jose Abad Santos. It has a depth of 125 km.

Intensity 4 was felt in Mati, Davao Oriental; Intensity 3 in General Santos City, Tampakan, South Cotabato, Tagum City, Davao City, Malita, and Davao del Sur; and Intensity 2 Kidapawan City, Koronadal City, and Glan and Sarangani.

Phivolcs said there were no reported damage, but aftershocks are expected.

Earlier in the day, a magnitude 4.5 quake also rocked the province of Surigao del Sur. (Sunnex)
