MANILA -- People living in Visayas and Mindanao should have their rain gears ready as they are off to a possibly rainy weekend while the state weather bureau monitors a possible cyclone off the coast of Southern Mindanao.

In its 5 a.m. bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that a low pressure area (LPA) was seen 1,460 kilometers (km) East of Southern Mindanao at 4 a.m. If it develops into a cyclone, it will be named Agaton and will be the first storm to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility this 2014.

Meanwhile, the Northeast Monsoon (Hanging Amihan) continues to affect Luzon.

Pagasa said, "Visayas and Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rain showers and thunderstorms."

"Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rain," it added.

Pagasa also said that moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over northern Luzon and the eastern sections of Luzon and of Visayas.

The state weather agency added that the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough while everywhere else in the country, winds will be light to moderate coming from the northeast with slight to moderate seas.

Pagasa also issued a gale warning over the seaboards of Northern Luzon and Visayas as well as the eastern seaboard of Central and Southern Luzon.

It said that strong to gale force winds are expected to affect Negros Occidental, Guimaras, Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan, Antique, Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental, Samar, Leyte, Batanes, Calayan, Babuyan, northern coast of Cagayan and northern coast of Ilocos Norte, Aurora, Camarines Provinces, Catanduanes, eastern coast of Albay, eastern coast of Sorsogon, eastern coast of Quezon including Polillo Island.
