STUDENTS returning to school on Monday were urged to sync their laptops, tablets and smartphones with the government's official time server.

The Department of Education (DepEd) issued instructions for syncing devices to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration's (Pagasa) time server.

Pupils and students are expected to return to school on Monday following the long Christmas and New Year holidays.

"Balik Eskwela na sa January 6, 2014! Siguraduhing on time tayo (It's back to school on January 6! Make sure we're on time)!" the DepEd said on its Twitter account.

DepEd instructed students to head to the Pagasa time portal, which gives instructions on how to sync to computers.

The instructions indicate students should check the box for synchronizing with an Internet time server and type in this address.

Meanwhile, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said in a statement that a simultaneous flag-raising activity will be conducted on Monday, January 6 at 8 a.m. to kick-off the "National Time Consciousness Week."

Together with the flag-raising activity, all government offices were asked to display the Philippine Standard Time (PhST) as provided by Pagasa.

“Our Juan Time campaign seeks to reverse the negative connotations of ‘Filipino Time’ from tardiness to punctuality, discipline, and utmost regard for other people’s time. Lateness often leads to missed opportunities. What we want is for Filipinos to arrive on time as the new norm,” DOST Secretary Mario Montejo said in the statement. (JK/Sunnex)
