VICE President Jejomar Binay and legislators thanked ring icon Manny Pacquiao on Sunday for dedicating his victory over Brandon Rios to the Filipino people, especially to areas ravaged by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan).

"He is an inspiration to his kababayans and a reminder that the Filipino can rise above adversity and weather any storm," said Binay.

Cavite Representative Elpidio Barzaga said Pacquiao cheered up the nation saddened by calamities and the alleged multi-billion peso pork barrel scam. He also hoped that Pacquiao's next duel will be staged in the Philippines.

"Aside from unifying the nation once again, the resounding triumph of Pacquiao demonstrates to the world the hard work, courage, and strength of Filipinos as trademarks in winning the battle," said Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez, whose province was severely battered by Yolanda.

The eight-division champion showed to the world the resiliency of the Filipino spirit, said Davao City Representative Karlo Nograles.

"We may fall down once, twice, multiple times but the true test of the character of the Filipino is how many times we get up after each fall. Thank you to everyone who kept the faith for Manny, the People's Champ and to all who continue to believe. Let us translate that faith and belief into our own lives as a Filipino people," he said.

"Just like Manny, the Filipino people will rise, fight and succeed," added Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada, who watched the fight at ringside after having received free tickets from the boxer.

Pacquiao absorbed back-to-back losses last year, highlighted by a frightening knockout against Juan Manuel Marquez. (Sunnex)
