FILIPINOS can spend longer vacation during the Christmas season next year as Malacanang released Monday the list of holidays and special non-working days for 2014.

In a press briefing, Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said that President Benigno Aquino III signed on September 25 Proclamation No. 655 declaring the regular holidays, special non-working days, and special holiday for all schools for next year.

"In order to foster closer family ties and enable our countrymen to observe Christmas more meaningfully, it is but fitting to declare 24 December (Wednesday) and 26 December 2014 (Friday) as additional non-working days throughout the country," the Proclamation said.

This means that those who do not work on a weekend have five straight days to enjoy their vacation.

For next year, the regular holidays include New Year's Day (January 1, Wednesday), Araw ng Kagitingan (April 9, Wednesday), Maundy Thursday (April 17), Good Friday (April 18), Labor Day (May 1, Thursday), Independence Day (June 12, Thursday), National Heroes Day (August 25, last Monday of August), Bonifacio Day (November 30, Sunday), Christmas Day (December 25, Thursday) and Rizal Day (December 30, Tuesday).

The proclamations declaring national holidays for the observance of Eid'l Fitr and Eidul Adha shall be issued after the appropriate dates of the Islamic holidays have been determined in accordance with the Islamic calendar or the lunar calendar, or upon Islamic astronomical calculations, whichever is possible or convenient, the Proclamation said.

Aside from December 24 and 26, the special non-working days for next year are the following: Chinese New Year (January 31, Friday); Black Saturday (April 19), Ninoy Aquino Day (August 21, Thursday), All Saints Day (November 1, Saturday), and last day of the year (December 31, Wednesday).

February 25 (Tuesday) was declared as a special holiday for schools to commemorate the Edsa Revolution. (SDR/Sunnex)
