Radioman shot dead in Iligan

ILIGAN CITY -- A hard-hitting commentator was shot dead at 10:30 p.m. of Thursday in the coastal village of Buru-un in this city, near a school of fisheries.

Senior Police Officer 1 (SPO1) Niel Ajos, of Nunucan Police Station, told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro by phone that the victim was identified as Fernando "Nanding" Solijon, an anchor of the public affairs program "Sandiganan" of Love Radio FM.

Initial police investigation showed that Solijon was invited by a close friend in Buru-un for a dinner and drinking spree. When Solijon left the place and walked toward his car, two unidentified gunmen riding in a motorcycle shot Solijon in close range several times.

"Solijon sustained 13 gunshot wounds in his forehead, abdomen and shoulder," Ajos said.

Solijon was brought to a hospital in Iligan City, but was declared dead on arrival. His remains were brought to a funeral parlor.

Police are conducting an investigation to determine the motive of the killing.

Solijon has been receiving death threats since election campaign period until he was shot to death.

Solijon is the latest broadcast journalist killed in Iligan City since 1983 when the late hard-hitting Charlie Aberillaof the defunct dxWG AM radio was shot dead while on board a radio program in Barangay Pala-o this city.

Aberilla's gunmen barged in at the station while he was on-board his public affairs program, Charlie's rumble at 8 a.m. Five men shot him dead. The gruesome killing of Aberilla was recorded live on air.

The National Union of Journalist of the Philippines (NUJP) Iligan City-Lanao chapter strongly condemned Solijon's murder.

Based on NUJP record, there are 201 journalists killed since 1986, 134 were killed in line of duty. If proven to be work-related, Solijon will be the 19th journalist killed in the line of duty under the Aquino administration.(Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro/Sunnex)
