SEARCH engine giant Google added five more languages to its Google Translate service to “bridge the gap between the content available online and people’s ability to access information.”

Added on May 8, together with more than 70 of the world’s languages, were Bosnian, Cebuano, Hmong, Javanese and Marathi.

Bosnian is the official language of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but it is also spoken in regions of neighboring countries.

Cebuano is one of the languages spoken in the Philippines, predominantly in Visayas and Mindanao, while Hmong is spoken in many countries across the world, including China, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and throughout United States.

Javanese is the second most-spoken language in Indonesia, and Marathi is spoken in India.

Other Indian languages supported with Google Translate are: Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.

The new languages except for Bosnian are still in “alpha,” meaning the quality is not perfect and it needs a lot of improvement.

“We are excited to reach 70+ language milestone and we look forward to add more languages,” said Svete Kelman, program manager of Google Translate, on the Google blog. (Sunnex)
