WITH just one month of preparations left before the 2015 Palarong Pambansa officially kicks off, Cordillera wrestlers lock their sight on a tremendous performance over other competing regions.

The CAR wrestling team bannered by Ifugao athletes trains into high gear in a bid to secure the overall title in the sport event debut May 3-9 in Tagum City, Davao Del Norte.

Hungduan wrestling team coach and manager Marilyn Buyucan-Bunolna told Sun.Star Baguio grapplers competing in the combative sport event are on the final stretch of their preparations for the upcoming national event.

"So far the children are doing good sa everyday training nila, they are really optimistic na magiging maganda ang performance nila lalo pa at kasama na ang event sa medal race this year," Bunolna said.

Ifugao, who almost swept the 2015 Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association Meet, will bolt nine athletes together with one other player coming from Baguio City.

Included in this year's rosters are Ifugao’s Maricca Hagitan, Arselyn Battatong, Lovelyn Bandao, Bless Napiloy and Clarizza Mae Hagitan for the five-man girls' team, followed by Bryan Dulnuan, Kenneth Manguhan, Ruzzel Tuguinay, and Nathaniel Ryan Gullunan, as well as Baguio City’s Jess Ngolab for the secondary boy’s line-up.

Meanwhile, Department of Education-Cordillera Regional athletic manager Agustin Gumuwang said the department will definitely embrace the said sport as the region’s new gold mine event.

Gumuwang said he is confident CAR will be marking the first overall leadership as wrestling officially makes its way into the gold medal ranking of the annual national sports race.

"As well as the other combative sport events we repeatedly maintained leadership in the past years of Palaro, wrestling is positively seen as a sport Cordillerans can definitely shine," Gumuwang said.

In the 2014 Palaro held in Laguna, Cordillera impressed 16 other regions in the country after bagging the second overall stint with three gold, two silver, and four bronze medals.

CAR was only shadowed by the top ranked Davao Region, with their three gold, three silver, and one bronze record.

"Definitely our athletes will be eyeing to dominate in their respective sport events, we just have to make sure they are well trained and prepared by the regional coaches in time for Palaro," Gumuwang added.

Apart from wrestling, other sport events included for the 2015 Palaro medal race are billiards, futsal, wushu, bunong-braso (arm wrestling), and kadang-kadang.

Rendering to DepEd memorandum no. 2, s. 2014, all six new sport competitions will be competed as a regular sport starting this year.
