UNIVERSITY of Baguio will try to set the tempo against their rivals as they seek to defend the men’s basketball crown in the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League season 28.

With the largest collegiate sports association officially unfolded at the Cordillera Career Development College over the weekend, the UB Cardinals likewise joined the unfurling of another sports story directing to snatch the crown for the 23rd time this year.

UB athletic director Ed Laureano said their team do not expect gathering easy victories throughout the season.

“Although we have the advantage of being the defending champions we are not really considering that the other schools will be easily giving their chances for the title,” Laureano said.

UB expects to remain in the limelight as they lean towards six of holdover, which includes Darrien Ocassion, Ranzae Cosme, Aljon Macalintal, Arvin Bongon, Noel Cathedral Jr., and Mark Arellano.

“I believe we are the underdogs for this season. Many other teams managed to rebuild and recruit budding players, as the defending champions it is harder to maintain the seat rather than chase after it,” Laureano said.

“After a fruitful victory last year, talagang the pressure is on going into it another time. The team is aiming to start this competition in a high note,” Laureano added.

The UB athletic director said the adjustment of their school calendar to August was another factor that may affect their teams since it lessened their time to prepare mainly the rookies who are now rolling with the team.

Losing a lot of other key players from last season including BBEAL season 27 MVP Kendrick Basan, Ian Seña, and Tito Astrande, the perennial champions of the almost three-decade association will linger to draw another back-to-back from last year.

The largest collegiate sports association in the region gathered local sports fans in its opening ceremonies hosted by the youngest member of the ten-school conclave, Baguio College of Technology Atoms.

Other teams seeing action for this year’s men’s basketball competition include the Saint Louis University Navigators, three-time title holder University of the Cordilleras Jaguars, Philippine Military Academy Cavaliers, two-time champs CCDC Admirals, Benguet State University Wildcats and Pines City Colleges Warriors.
