BAGUIO Central University may not boast of any prized rookies in their line-up but the Eagles remains optimistic of their campaign in men's basketball when the Baguio – Benguet Educational Athletic League opens August 30.

The Eagles, who made it to the final four during season 26 in 2012, hopes to make a repeat this year despite losing key players.

"Hindi naman kami masysadong umaasa pero masuwerte na kame kung makapasok pa sa final four ulit," said BCU athletic director Percy Sacyapen.

With season 28 set to open on August 30 at the CCDC gym hosted by the Baguio College of Technology, the Eagles will once again rely on the trio of Justin Paul Lange, Juanito Mones and Marvin Tima-ang.

The BCU athletic director meanwhile said the Eagles has been relying on their enrollees to beef up the line-up and hopes the 14-man roster would be finalized next week.

The Eagles might have lost Brent Esteban and Richard Kiaki last year and Gendrik Kiaki this year, Sacyapen said they will have to make do with their current line-up who he believes will still be a tough team when basketball action tips off by the end of the month.

"Sa totoo lang we don’t recruit because I can’t offer them anything. Kaya what we do is we just rely on the enrollees that we have," added Sacyapen.

BCU, unlike defending champion University of Baguio, University of the Cordilleras, and Saint Louis University; known as the big three in the league has the capability of recruiting high caliber players from high school and offer scholarship.

"We don't even have scholarship so we just content our selves kung anong meron," Sacyapen quipped.

But that will not stop the Eagles from competing against the best in the league against the big three who will once again parade prolific line-up including host BCT Atoms who was reportedly beefed-up their squad.

The largest collegiate sports association in the region is expected to draw thousands of local sports fans from the different member schools during the opening ceremonies.

UB Cardinals will seek its unprecedented 23rd crown in the league after dislodging the University of the Cordilleras Jaguars in an epic three game finale who won back –to – back title in 2011 and 2012, the third for the school after winning their first crown in 1995 in the defunct Baguio – Benguet Collegiate Athletic Association.

Other teams seeing action for this year’s men’s basketball competition include SLU Navigators, Philippine Military Academy Cavaliers, two-time champion Cordillera Career Development College, Benguet State University Wildcats and Pines City Colleges Warriors.
