DESPITE failing to bag the top honor in the recently concluded Seoul International Archery Festa in South Korea last August 3-9, city-based lady archer Kareel Meer Hongitan is enthusiastic to draw more improvement in her marksmanship skills.

Hongitan, among the first drafts pick to join the Philippine women juniors team, promised to improve her performances in the next sports outing.

“Kahit na bronze medal lang and sa team event lang kami nakakuha ng award na inuwi, I am positively happy with the outcome of the competition,” Hongitan said.

The tourism student playing for the University of Baguio Cardinals reached the semifinals of the individual contest but failed to draw bronze as she ranked fourth overall out of 54 other competing athletes.

“I may not have won more medals but I learned a lot. The experience I had from the tournament just widened the room for my future improvement,” Hongitan said.

The 16-year-old junior archer topped the Philippine national ladder in the 4th Regional Ranking Evaluation held earlier this year.

Hongitan, who recently played her first international contest, completed the entry of the Philippine women's contingent that salvaged third in the team competition.

Hongitan, together with Youth Olympic Games athlete Bianca Gotuaco, Palarong Pambansa champion Mary Queen Ybañez, and Philippine National Games winner Crizabelle Merto toppled Singapore in the first round.

The PHL women’s team then shattered Taiwan to qualify into the semifinal round. They bowed to the host South Korea, who won the weeklong event, before stunning Mexico for third honors.

Some 14 teams from 13 different nations, including Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam, Great Britain and Irvine and Long Beach from the United States participated in the tournament backed by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Seoul Sports Council and Seoul Archery Association.
