CHILDREN are exuding with energy; they walk and run tireless at play, while elder people do the same walking and playing for more complex reasons -- health and fitness. There are millions of people between age two to even ninety two or more who get both pleasure and comfort from walking or running.

Road race for example is growing fast as a sport for children, and it rivals other sports like basketball or swimming etc. where children must be encouraged to join and participate for fitness and fun.

Considering sports tournaments and road races being organized, we see a good number of children who usually participate; they are a joy to watch but can be a headache to administer.

But how ever hard it is to administer sports meets for kids; they will always be kids, however, the administration of such meets and tournaments is where kids are encourage to start playing formal sports of their interest to be in shape, healthy and fit, and with the objective of teaching them that sport is fun.

Sports programs for beginners like kids or every beginner in sports should be low-keyed, and start by teaching them the objective of sports. The ideals of sports and the game should be emphasized as well as the importance of sportsmanship. Teaching of skills should also be stressed that will include proper form and techniques in all aspects of the sport.

Giving praise and attention to everyone regardless of ability and keeping their track records is important in giving incentive for both team and personal improvement because this has proven to be a major motivating factor.

When teaching beginners, the sport season should only be eight weeks, with a three times a week scheduled practices, this is because the first two weeks of practice should be spent for conditioning and the other two weeks for skills development to complete a one year training program, and then mini tournaments can be programmed for interest.

Sports is a natural extension of play for the young and old, and for whatever the purpose of playing is, the most interesting is the fact that health and fitness is something we are blessed with as children, but squander as we age. The same way that the body has just so much energy, however, when more energy is needed during our growth stages, less will be available as we age, affecting performance and health.
