Tour de Benguet postponed-A A +A
Monday, August 4, 2014
DESPITE having sustainable support from local running and sport enthusiasts, organizers of the 2014 Tour de Benguet have postponed all race schedules until November this year.
Race organizer and Extremes Cordillera Sports and Events president Russel Kurt Sebio said all race schedules will resume later this year in accordance to the memorandum issued by Benguet Governor Nestor Fongwan.
“Unfortunately, we will be rescheduling the dates of the remaining legs of this foot race series. We apologize to all stakeholders and we hope they will all understand,” Sebio said.
Sebio said the rescheduling of all the remaining race legs is due to the increased hazards of the rainy season both to the participants and organizers of the event and has moved all the remaining races to November this year.
According to the memorandum signed by Board Member Robert Namoro, the cancellation of the event was not only based to the bad weather brought by the rainy season but also the dangers foreseen in the race routes of the event.
“Some parts of the race routes are prone to land fall and falling rocks during the rainy season, some areas can also be on zero visibility,” Sebio quipped.
TDB 2014, branded as the biggest series of foot races in the province, created to promote the whole of Benguet officially opened its first chain earlier in June.
The second segment, Bronze Leg, was previously rescheduled before its gun start last June 19 and 20 due to the typhoon Glenda which also affected the region.
According to Sebio, Extremes Cordillera already notified registered participants to claim their refunds.
“We are deeply sorry for the inconvenience but the participant’s safety is our main priority,” Sebio stressed.
Other races included on Tour de Benguet’s leg sprints are Strawberry Leg, Potato Leg, Handicraft Leg, and Pineapple Leg.
According to organizers new race dates will soon be posted in their Facebook wall www.facebook.com/extremescordillera.
