GOLDEN Pine Hotel brought along their A game in outclassing Team Sergeross to claim their first championship title in bracket C of the 2nd Budz Cup Invitational Basketball Tournament at the Easter College gym Sunday evening.

Golden Pine rushed down an 8-1 run nearing the 2:00 marker of the pay-off canto that derailed the gritty Sergeross squad, 102-94.

Jesse Tomlen joined force with Vic Manalili in lifting GPH from an 85-83 lead in the 3:20 mark of the fourth quarter before pulling away with a nine-point gap 93-84 with 1:53 left in the ballgame.

Efren Mariano, Fer Bacani, and Rey Bilibli managed to add ten more points for Team Segeross for a 98-94 standoff with 43 seconds left in the ballgame, but that was their last hurrah for the season as Jesse Tomlen dropped down the remaining four points to seal their fate in winning the crown for the hoteliers.

Sergeross controlled the first half with a four-point edge as brothers Richard and Rey Bilibli, together with Bacani and Kier Gonzaga bannered Sergeross for a 46-42 deficit going into the third canto.

GPH managed to tie the ballgame 51 all in the third canto with 7:57 running down the clock before going into a 58-51 lead courtesy of Tomlen.

But Sergeross managed to stay within the game as Richard together with Jun Bacani stepped up for their team for a 69-64 count, GPH in front.

Mariano managed to spark hope for Sergeross as he triggered four-of-six of his three-point shots in the fourth period for an 82-80 gap in the 4:13 marker.

“We are very proud to gain our first championship in this tournament. Lahat kami came up with an important role throughout the season and finally we ended with the title,” said GPH playing coach Noel Balionga.

“This will be a good challenge for the next season’s tournament, we will do our very best to defend the crown. We came here tonight as a team and we are very happy we will go home as champions,” Balionga added.

Tomlen was named most valuable player for the season after displaying an all-around game scoring 25 points, 17 rebounds, five steals, two assists, and two blocks.

Manalili capped the game with 28 points, eight rebounds, and three steals, as former UB Cardinals Kevin Orduña and Alvin Alindoza finished with 20 and 16 points respectively.

Jao Estrada led the scoring for Sergeross with 17 points, with Mariano and Rey finishing 14 points each, while Fer, Jun, and Richard added 13, 12, and 11 accordingly.
