A NEW archery shooting range will soon house city-based marksmen once rehabilitation of Baguio City’s lone sports facility is completed.

With the upcoming phase one of the scheduled improvements, the Summer Capital's archery team is looking forward to have their own spot inside the Athletic Bowl.

Archery regional coach John Hongitan said the team has long been waiting for a formal range inside the city sports facility.

Hongitan said once the development materializes, they hope more locals will soon get to build interest in adopting archery as a sport.

"We are really hoping that the city will include finishing a standard archery range to be used by our athletes. Siguro kapag meron na tayong matatawag na sariling lugar inside our sports facility we can call on more interested people to be part of our sport," Hongitan said.

“Although we have an actual area there, nahihirapan kasi ang mga bata because of the dangers and difficulties for both the athletes and their equipments,” Hongitan added.

In 2008, former city administrator and now city councilor Peter Fianza has specified the back of the city’s swimming pool as space for archery training in the city.

Hongitan said athletes refuse to settle in the area since it is underdeveloped.

“Unang concern kasi is the position of our target area, yung mga arrowhead ng mga bata madaling masira since yung likod ng mga target face is immediately a stone concrete. Another one is the distance, medyo kulang “Mas maganda siguro the contractors or the ones who will give the city the master plan will also ask us, the actual users, kung ano ang suggestion namin so they can take note of our idea,” Hongitan added.

Apart from the archery range, some of the proposed developments inside the Athletic Bowl include the installation of tartan tracks, improvement of drainage area, re-greening of the football and baseball field, and the installation of road paths.

The city is rushing for the improvements in time for the hosting of the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association meet on February 2015.
