WENG Pascual hit a putback with 37 seconds left as Team Codalian came from behind to shock defending champion Dagsian United, 92-89, and salvage third place in bracket C of the 2nd Budz Cup Invitational Basketball Tournament.

After three lead changes and two tied scores in the payoff period, Pascual came out of nowhere to snare a crucial ball possession from Dagsian and heave a fastbreak floater that lifted Codalian to victory Friday night at the Easter College gym.

“It was a do or die defensive play, kahit sino naman sa team will probably step up with the situation. Luckily it was me who was there and all I did was helped our team to win,” said Pascual.

Pascual managed to step up his defense after a steal from Dagsian guard Carlo Muñoz for a 90-89 count with 16 ticks left and finished with a season high 36 points and added 19 rebounds and six steals.

“This was a better finish for us than last season, unfortunately we came out just number three. I guess the guys will continue to do better in the future, siguro we still have a lot of chance to head towards our first title here in Budz Cup,” Pascual added.

Dagsian pulled an early 18-6 run against the Architect squad in the first canto and closed with a double digit lead, 28-16, going into the second period behind Michael Lunar, together with Flynn and Shaun Dao-wan’s 18 combined points.

Codalian however managed to get their own rhythm in the second quarter as Khing Pascual sets off from the bench joining his brother Weng together with Vic Nuñez in hacking 34 points that trimmed the gap to 55-50.

Shaun managed to drop back-to-back baskets in the opening of the third canto to extend Dagsian’s lead to 59-50, but Khing together with Nico Caliguing rallied nine straight points to tie the ballgame at 59-all with 6:47 running in the third period.

The Architects managed to earn their first lead of the night, 64-63, behind Weng’s fastbreak points in the 1:47 mark but Dagsian spoiled the gala as Lunar dropped four points for a 67-all deadlock going into the fourth.

Dagsian extended their lead to four, 87-84, with 1:53 running down the clock but Weng’s five-point outrage cut the difference, 89-88, with 40 seconds left.

Dagsian tried to regain the lead in their next possession but a costly turnover spelled their doom in the remaining seconds of the ball game.

Khing finished with 21 points with Caliguing adding 11, as Nuñez chipped in 10 points for Codalian while Flynn led the scorers for Dagsian with 28 points and 11 rebounds with Shaun finishing 21, as Lunar added 12, while Muñoz had 10.
