Sangiao: High altitude grappling

THE Team Lakay High-Altitude Grappler’s Cup has reached its 19th series since it first started. The first grappler’s cup was held when Team Lakay thought of organizing an event other than wushu competitions for its athletes and students to be exposed to. Another aim was to develop the ground games of its athletes and students.

It was where some of its successful fighters like Honorio Banario, Crisanto Pitpitunge, Geje Eustaquio, Dave Galera, Roldan Sangcha-an, Gina Iniong, Harold Banario, Jerome Wanawan and others have started competing and checked on their skills before they have gone through bigger arena to apply and test their ground skills since it is part of the sport of Mixed Martial Arts, which includes all aspects of martial arts, not just striking but also wrestling and jiu jitsu.

The Team Lakay Grappler’s Cup was one of the events wherein Team Lakay organized to check and have its athletes compete with others in a competition mode.


It has been held in gyms such as the University of the Cordilleras Gymnasium and La Trinidad Municipal Gym and also in parks such as the People’s Park and Igorot Park in Baguio City as well as in beaches of La Union.

Now its 19th series, the event is going to be held at the Benguet State University Closed Gym on July 27, 2014 from 9:00 in the morning till 6:00 in the evening. Team Lakay has partnered with Benguet State University in order to develop the athletic skills of the young generation as one of their advocacies.

The said event is sponsored by Cherifer Premium, Vicious Circle, Gatorde, Tiong San Department Store and Supermarket, Sun*Star Baguio, Bagsan Law Office, Dr. Dave Taclobao and Lone Star Bakahan and Cafe located at Palma Ville, Puguis, La Trinidad, Benguet.

The weigh-in is in the afternoon of Saturday, July 26th at the Lakay La Trinidad Gym in Km. 4, La Trinidad, Benguet.

Regular gyms and teams who are joining are Altitude Gym, Tribal Submission Gym, Fight Corps MMA Baguio, MPSPC Wushu Team, Philippine Military Academy Wushu and Judo Team, Young Men’s Christian Association-Baguio, University of the Cordilleras Wushu Team, Lakay Central Gym, Lakay La Trinidad Gym and Lakay San Fernando, La Union Team.

The event is open to all who are interested to join and is open for the public to watch.
