PADRE Burgos hit their first win of the season after thrashing Barangay San Antonio 87-72, in the ongoing eliminations round of the 5th Samahang Barangay Pangkalikasan-Lawana Cup 2014 Invitational Basketball Tournament.

Marlo Nuevo had a game high 24 points including seven rebounds to lift P. Burgos in their opening game at the DPS Compound covered court Sunday Morning.

P. Burgos went neck to neck with San Antonio before pulling away in the 1:57 mark of the second period to enjoy a seven-point lead at the close of the first half, 40 – 33.

Nuevo dropped 12 of the 24 in the third canto together with Aries Nayal, and Leo Gutierez who added 11 more points that extended P. Burgos’ advantage 63-52, with 1:50 left in the period.

Ron Calara managed to step up for San Antonio but was closed out with tight defense as the Padres remained in front 69-57, going into the fourth.

Maky Fernandez opened the pay-off period with back-to-back three-points for San Anton that sparked hope for their team and trimmed the gap at 69-63, with 4:55 running down the clock, but failed to sustain as Nuevo joined force with Joel Bona taking a 9-0 run for the Padres for a 78-63 lead with 3:20 left in the ballgame.

San Antonio tried to stage another comeback in the offensive end but P. Burgos managed to improve in their defense that helped them seal their first victory.

“Nahirapan din kami actually noong una, if you saw both teams, tic-tac lang ang takbo before the end of the first half. However, we tried to experiment sa offensive strategy and we found out yung kalamangan ng team,” said P. Burgos coach Elvis Mandiit.

“We hope to improve sa next na laro, mahirap na we were careless this time and sana mas maganda ang performance ng mga boys sa following games,” Mandiit added.

Gutierez finished with 19 points, including 17 points he converted in the second quarter.

Calara led San Antonio with 29 points, while Fernandez added 17 as Ruel Banco generated 12.
