WITH more than a month before its official kick-off, the executive and technical committee of the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League is already finalizing its scheduled 28th season grand opening on August 30.

BBEAL season commissioner and Athletic Director of the host school Baguio College of Technology Willy Antonio told Sun.Star Baguio plans for the first phase procedures are already on the final stage of its preparation.

“So far the executive and technical heads are already straightening down some of the adjustments and the plans for BBEAL’s striking opening, we are challenged to bring forth last season’s success, and as BCT hosts this year we are exerting our full effort,” Antonio said.

According to Antonio, opening ceremonies anticipates thousands of local spectators including college athletes, different school heads, athletic directors, local media, and various sport fans from the different school members of BBEAL.

He said that with the help from the bigger universities of the organization, they expect to deliver an impressive opening despite being the youngest member of the region’s largest collegiate sports association.

“We are actually coordinating with other schools to assist us so that we can deliver the supposed expectations, we are new to the hosting idea but I guess with the support from other college and universities our first time on laying in will run smoothly until the turnover next year,” Antonio said.

“Probably within this week we can already have our meeting which will mostly outline the opening rites. Gusto na rin namin ma-plantsa lahat since next month some schools will already be busy sa opening naman ng classes nila,” Antonio added.

BCT, the youngest member in the 10 school conclave will be hosting for the first time the region’s oldest collegiate sports which will now be on its 28th year.

Among the innovations for this year will be the split-up of basketball and volleyball. In the league’s previous season, the two sports events are always scheduled in the first phase of the competition but this time, volleyball will take centerstage in the second phase of the tournament.

“Separating the two centrepiece contest of the league is seen to be the key in generating more fans which will follow the games of their school teams,” Antonio said.

Apart from basketball, first phase events scheduled for BBEAL will see competitions including chess, badminton, table tennis, sepak, swimming and archery.

The second phase events perceived to start on January are volleyball, athletics, wushu, taekwondo, softball, baseball, football and judo.

Last season, new side events were introduced like Mr. & Ms. BBEAL and Love Run matching the celebration in the month of February.

Aside from BCT, Baguio City based members of the league Baguio Central University, Philippine Military Academy, Pines City College Inc., Saint Louis University, University of Baguio, University of the Cordilleras, and the University of the Philippines-Baguio.

La Trinidad based schools Benguet State University and Cordillera Career Development College are also affiliated of the collegiate league.
