LOURDES Barangay proved its worth in the league as it demolished new comer Bakakeng Central Barangay, 63-51, in the 5th Samahang Barangay Pangkalikasan-Lawana Cup 2014 Invitational Basketball Tournament.

The Dominican based squad broke the game wide open with a 14-4 run in the first period blast sparked by shooting guard Kier Gonzaga and never looked back since en route to their first victory at the Engineer’s Hill covered court Sunday morning.

“Maganda ang naging depensa ng team kaya yung mga attempts ng mga kalaban talagang napigilan namin sa umpisa pa lang,” Gonzaga said.

Gonzaga led Lourdes Barangay with 13 points, seven rebounds, and five steals igniting his team with an 18-8 edge at the close of the first quarter.

“Marami pang ibang mas magagaling na team kaya sa mga next na laro parehas pa rin ang game plan, tight defense and good ball rotation,” Gonzaga added.

Cris Ponseca, Ceasar Oxciano, and Mike Buagan picked up the phase left by Gonzaga in the second period chipping in 16 points for a 24-point edge, 36-14, at the close of the first half.

Bakakeng Central’s Jerry Lumsi joined force with fellow bigman Jonathan Tom in the third canto for a 12-point strip in the first three minutes but was stuck down as Lourdes pounded on the offensive end with Gonzaga, Dave Stapely, and Jun Bacani driving towards a 55-28 lead.

Lumsi once again tried to spark hope for Bakakeng Central in the pay-off period as he teamed up with Paolo Reysamiranda dropping 14 points from the painted area that trimmed down the gap, 59-47, with 2:15 left in the ballgame.

Bakakeng tried to do more damage but Lourdes set the tone in the last few minutes as Stapely dropped four more points that drove the final nail in the coffin.

Stapely finished with 11 points while brothers Angelo and Cris Ponseca capped eight and six respectively, while Jun Bacani added seven.

Lumsi led the scoring for Bakakeng Central with 18 points, Reysamiranda added 10, while Tom and Hadji Atuban each delivered six points apiece.
