DEFENDING champion South Sanitary Camp squad kicked off the season on a high note as they roll past Barangay Andres Bonifacio, 84-81, in the 5th Samahang Barangay Pangkalikasan-Lawana Cup 2014 at the Engineer’s Hill covered court Sunday morning.

South Sanitary leaned on bigman Reagan Nabua, who capped out with a double-double figure scoring 22 points and fifteen rebounds.

Nabua also made his presence felt in the defensive end coming up with two blocked shots and two steals which helped his team to a 62-58 edge at the end of the third quarter.

Emerson Esgana and Fergal Bugayong waxed hot for Sanitary Camp chipping in 13 combined points for a 47 – 42 lead going into the third canto.

Dennis Lisyapag, Elison Versola, and JR Ignation stepped up their game to come close at 59-58 with 1:40 remaining in the third period but Sanitary Camp restored a four point lead, 62-58 to end the quarter.

Sanitary Camp tried to shake off the persistent Bonifacio team with a 14-6 run in the first five minutes of the fourth period, but the three-man team of Lisyapag, Verzola, and Joey Balawas managed to bring back Bonifacio 79-78, with less than three minutes left in the game.

Bonifacio tried to steal the lead in the final minute of the ball game but Nabua and Esgana converted five more points that sealed the win.

“We just came together as a team and finished as a team, actually napahirapan rin kami to break the victory today kasi kulang kami sa mga key players,” Sanitary Camp coach Boyet Guansing said.

“Anyway ang importante lang naman dito is to constantly generate good teamwork, every team member should just stay on the same page as the whole team,” Guansing added.

Ignation, Lispayag, and Versola finished with 12 points apiece for Bonifacio, while Balawas and Benedict Gaspar added 10 points each.

Close to 60 local squads from the different barangays in the city are currently vying for the top crown in the 5-year old basketball league backed by the Liga ng mga Barangay of Baguio, aimed to promote sports camaraderie and environmental protection among its members.
