MORE than 50 city basketball referees and enthusiasts took time out in a refreshers course in the recently held Basketball Referees Sports Clinic held at the YMCA Function Hall and Gymnasium July 7-8.
Spearheaded by the Young Men’s Christian Association of Baguio in partnership with the Best Center Sports Inc., the two-day sports event was facilitated by nationally accredited basketball referees.
The sports clinic aiming to renew basketball rules information was locally supported by the National Amateur Basketball Referee’s Organization (Nabro) and the Department of Education-Division of Baguio.
Nabro-Baguio coordinator Edwin Edades said the organizers of the event were pleased with the active participation of local sportsmen.
"Sabi ng mga organizers very active and attentive daw during the discussion ang mga participants ng seminar. Although hindi umabot ng hundreds ang mga nag-attend it was very successful since the goal, which was to inform and educate was achieved," Edades said.
The clinic was primarily intended to reintroduce new basketball rules in the 2014 International Basketball Federation or FIBA (Fédération Internationale de Basket-ball) guidelines.
"The program will was basically a refresher course for our local referees in line with some of the changes in the new set of guidelines implemented inside the hard-court," Edades said.
"We are glad na excluding pa sa mga local referees natin marami pang ibang sumali to update themselves sa mga guidelines nitong sport na ito," Edades added.
The clinic which was scheduled into two parts, lecture and practical training, was assisted by national referees of Nabro head office, headed by their national president Rolando Omampo.
Local Physical Education teachers from Department of Education, coaches, referees, including aspiring basketball referees were the bulk of partakers in the said two-day sports affair.
