THE biggest collegiate sports league in Northern Luzon unfurls its 28th season next month as the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League is hoping to have another colorful rivalry among its members.

The ten school members will kick off the season on August 30 at the UB Cardinals gym with host Baguio College of Technology marching the lead for the first time in BBEAL.

28th BBEAL Commissioner and BCT Atoms basketball coach Willy Antonio said the executive and technical committee is thrilled for the upcoming opening of the season.

“We are all excited with this especially to the host school BCT. We know it will be a very busy season but it does not bother us since all member schools pledged their all-out support to the successful staging of BBEAL this year,” Antonio said during the turnover ceremony held at the BCT Naguillan Campus Wednesday.

The largest and longest running collegiate sports league patterned from NCAA and UAAP hopes to see new modifications this year.

“We have discussed the amendments of the by-laws and with it we will try to be better a sports association,” Antonio said.

The almost three-decade league houses an estimated 50,000 students from Baguio City and Cordillera not to mention the sports fans built to support the various schools present.

“This will be a very interesting year for BBEAL, the adjustments made are hoped to generate more fans from each school that aims to promote a healthy competition,” Antonio quipped.

The current BBEAL executive board agreed to divide its centerpiece games, basketball and volleyball to build a better audience base.

Basketball will remain in the first phase while volleyball will banner the second phase of competition.

“Separating the two centrepiece contest of the league might be the key to generate more fans that will follow the games of each team from the different participating school,” Antonio quipped.

Apart from the ballgames, events in the first phase include chess, badminton, table tennis, sepak, swimming and archery.

The second phase will have athletics, wushu, taekwondo, softball, baseball, football and judo.

Last season, Mr. & Ms. BBEAL and Love Run made their debut as side event for the league.

Aside from BCT, members of the league are Baguio Central University, Philippine Military Academy, Pines City College Inc., Saint Louis University, University of Baguio, University of the Cordilleras, and the University of the Philippines-Baguio.

La Trinidad based Benguet State University and Cordillera Career Development College is also affiliated with the collegiate league.
