REPLACEMENT for Baguio City's swimming pool heater is expected to start later this month.

City Sports Coordinator Gaudencio Gonzales told Sun.Star Baguio the replacement of a new heating system for the sports facility will start sooner than expected.

“Gusto talaga natin na maumpisahan na agad yung project na yan as soon as possible at the same time para matapos agad at makabalik rin sa normal na operation,” Gaudencio said.

Last month, the office of the mayor signed a memorandum to officially bid out the project to interested contractors.

According to Gonzales, some suppliers of the heating system already indicated their interest as early as March this year which required the city to evaluate the bidders.

“Maraming mag-kakaibang options actually pero so far na-reduce na namin kung alin sa mga proposals ang pinaka-mainam sa lahat so not later than the end of this week we can already choose which contractor will do the job,” Gonzales said.

Earlier this year, a sum of P8 million was earmarked by the city sports office to cover for the proposed replacement of the facility’s faulty heating system.

Gonzales said the city will replace the equipment with a brand new machine contrary to the earlier preference of a buy back agreement.

“The city decided na gawing bago nalang lahat ang i-install na heater.

Noong una kasi may option na gawing buy back ang system para sana makabawas sa gastos but eventually nag-agree ang mga officials na baguhin nalang ang lahat,” Gonzales said.

“Mas magandang bago na lang para ma-assure ang quality ng heater na bibilhin. Baka kasi kung buy back ang gawin, baka siya rin ang mga parts na ilagay nila and eventually it will just easily break,” Gonzales added.

The city-owned Olympic size pool, which has been dead with its heating system since 2010, is the only haven for local swimmers particularly children in elementary and secondary school.

He added according to the proposals, the completion of the project will run from two to three months upon start.

The city wants to immediately pursue improvements in all of its sports facilities as it heads to host close to 5,000 delegates from the entire region for the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association next year.
