ARCHERS Kareel Meer Hongitan and Carl Buenaventura are set to raise country’s the flag and be among the Filipino athletes in the 2014 US Open Archery competition which kicks off July 19-20.

After landing top marks in the national elimination held May 15 at the FR Sevilla Archery Range in Quezon City, Hongitan and Buenaventura will join six other athletes from the Philippine national pool to vie for top honors in a competition backed by National Sports Association.
Coach John Hongitan told Sun.Star Baguio arrangements and preparations are still underway.

"We have not yet closed the discussion with those in-charge particularly from the Philippine Sports Association and the PANNA, but we hope our athletes will be able to compete in the US as it will actually help in improving the level of competence that they already have," Hongitan said.

Hongitan added allocations to send eight competitors (four in the male and female) including the assigned coach, will still be deliberated by the NSA.

"Wala pa actually go signal, but kung matuloy man sigurado ang spot for both our city based archers. Maybe until this weekend the national committee from PSC and PANNA will get to decide," Hongitan continued.

If approved, Hongitan, from the University of Baguio, and Buenaventura from the University of the Cordilleras, will be the first Baguio based archers to reach the competition.

The young Hongitan, one of the leading lady archers in the region, is ranked number one in the recently held national qualifiers for the 2014 US Open supervised by PANNA.

According to Hongitan, PSC should not hesitate to send the archers as it is seldom for the country to send competitors in international contest particularly the US Open.

"Dapat sana wala ng maraming questions in whether or not to fund all the expenses since PSC have already booked eliminations sa national pool natin. Mahirap naman na paasahin natin ang mga athletes which gave their time and efforts," said Hongitan.

"Sana lang hindi mismo yung mga higher officials natin sa national sports association ang maging hindrance, sila mismo ang dapat na sumuporta sa mga internationally qualified athletes natin," Hongitan added.

Baguio City, in the past years, has been recently known as a consistent contributor producing some of the top competitors in the national pool of archers.
