Baguio cops wrestling crown in PNG

BANNERED by Pacific X-treme Combat (PXC) featherweight contender Mark Streigl, Baguio’s wrestling team took home the over-all crown in the wrestling event of the recently concluded 2014 POC-PSC National Games held in Manila May 16-25.

The Summer Capital grapplers grabbed six gold, six silver, and four bronze medals during the week-long contest held at Riverbanks Center in Marikina City.

Streigl topped the 70kg division while Guzman Piayas (80kg), Elvis Julius (86kg), and Piaya Guzman (97kg) also snatched gold medals in their respective weight categories.


Ismael Bandiwan (54kg), Jayson Baucas (66kg), Mark Sumalag (71kg), and Kief Mang-usan (74kg) salvaged second place finish to settle for silver medals.

Sumalag also snatched third honors in the 74-kilograms division together with David Cadili (50kg), Ismael Bandiwa (54kg), Jhaymie Gayman (61kg), and Wedy Bumawe (65kg).

Meanwhile, three of Ifugao’s grapplers also earned medals led by two-time SEA Games gold medallist Jayson Balabal, who lorded in the 85kg and below division. Joshua Gayuchan saved a second place position in the 59kg weight class, and Morphy Namuhe settled for third with a bronze medal in the 54kg contest.

Athletes from the Summer Capital, as of this writing has 44 gold, 46 silver, and 38 bronze, bulk of which coming from arnis to win the overall crown anew for the third straight year, with 11-6-4.

Wushu also uplifted the city’s medal count with a 16-15-7 medal haul while Athletics took home 10-7-6 with former University of Baguio Cardinal Jessa Mangsat buying herself a ticket for a spot in the Philippine after cornering two gold medals from the 3-kilometer steeple chase and 5,000 meter run.

Judo capped a 1-11-11 haul as boxing generated one silver medal courtesy of Ronald Chavez Jr. (54kg juniors division) together with Mark Dedicatoria (50kg juniors) and Mansueto Eduyan Jr. (64kg elite division) who both settled for bronze medals.
