Striegl snatches wrestling gold in PNG

AFTER staying in hiatus since September last year, Mark Striegl returned to action to capture a gold medal in the wrestling competition of the PSC-POC Philippine National Games at the Riverbanks Center in Marikina City.

Striegl snatched the gold medal after winning all his three fights in the under 70 kg division free style wrestling.

The Pacific X-treme Combat (PXC) featherweight contender who owns a 12-1 professional record (2-1 in the PXC) also defeated some current and former members of the national pool en route to winning the mint.


Striegl, who fights out of the Baguio based Fight Corps MMA is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist but his wrestling prowess was put on full display during the tournament and defeated his two opponents via first round pins before winning by technical fall in the finals.

The 26-year-old last fought in September last year in the PXC where he suffered his first loss.

Meanwhile, two-time SEA Games gold medalist Jayson Balabal of Ifugao Province won the gold in the 85 kg Greco Roman.

Balabal, the country’s flag-bearer during the opening ceremony of the 27th Southeast Asian Games in Yangoon, meant business as he eyes for another spot in the Philippine team.

The Ifugao native will gun for his third gold medal in intenational competition after failing to win one during the SEAG in Myanmar since debuting in Laos four years ago.

This year’s PNG attracted around 7,000 athletes in 54 sports, including those for special athletes are eyeing a spot in the national team.

The PNG which is getting bigger and stronger since its revival four years ago, can also be used to justify the composition of the Philippine team to the 17th Asian Games in Incheon in September.
